Frequently Asked Questions

How does counselling work?

Trust is one of the most essential parts of counselling. To benefit fully from counselling, it is important that you feel at ease and have a genuine connection with your therapist. When rapport is built up, you can bring whatever is troubling you to the sessions, and I will support you in processing and making sense of it. My aim is always to offer a safe, confidential, and supportive space where you can explore your feelings and experiences openly.

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling typically focuses on specific, day to day issues and is often short-term, helping you develop coping strategies and emotional support. Psychotherapy tends to explore deeper, long-standing patterns rooted in past experiences and is usually longer-term, aiming for more profound psychological change. While both involve talking therapies and overlap in practice, psychotherapy often requires more extensive training and works with more complex mental health issues.

How do the sessions operate?

All sessions are scheduled in advance and will usually happen weekly at the same time. Sessions will last 50 minutes.

How many sessions will I need?

This is a common question, although there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Some clients may find a few sessions helpful, while others with deeper or more complex concerns may benefit from a gentler, long-term approach. At our initial session, we can discuss together what might be the most suitable number of sessions for you.

How much will it cost and what if I need to cancel a session?

The fee for each session is €70. It will benefit you to attend all sessions weekly as consistency helps and is an important part of the counselling process. If you do need to cancel an appointment, please provide 48 hours’ notice. There is a charge for missed sessions if this notice is not given.

Anxiety

Symptoms: Social anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) post-traumatic stress disorder, hypochondria.

Tell me more I need help:

Research indicates that counselling and psychotherapy are often the most effective treatment for anxiety and panic attacks. Unlike medication, which typically addresses only the symptoms, counselling and psychotherapy works to explore and resolve the underlying causes. Through the therapy sessions, you can learn to manage your fears, develop relaxation techniques, reframe anxious thinking, and build stronger coping and problem-solving skills. I will provide you with practical tools for managing anxiety and guide you on how to use them in everyday life.

Depression

Symptoms: Tired, agitation, sleeplessness, low mood, pre and post-natal depression

Tell me more I need help:

When treating depression, research strongly shows that counselling and psychotherapy are often the most effective approach. Unlike medication, which primarily targets the symptoms, the therapy sessions address the root causes of emotional distress. I can support you in understanding the underlying factors contributing to your depression, help you develop healthier ways of thinking, improve coping and problem-solving skills, and promote long-term emotional strength. Counselling and psychotherapy equip you with practical tools to manage challenges and teaches you to use them in daily life.

Confidence

Symptoms: Lack of motivation, self-esteem and self-acceptance, eating and body image issues

Tell me more I need help:

Confidence and self-esteem are often mistaken as being the same, but they are actually two different belief systems but are closely connected. Confidence relates to your belief in your ability to successfully carry out a specific task, while self-esteem relates to how you feel about yourself as a whole. For example, someone may have healthy self-esteem but lack confidence in their ability to fly a plane. However, the two can influence each other. When you feel better about yourself, it is often easier to develop confidence in particular areas. On the other hand, low self-esteem can make it more difficult to believe in your ability to succeed. If this sounds familiar to you, why not take the first step and contact me today. You do not have to face these problems alone.

Grief/Loss

Symptoms: Feelings of hopelessness, sadness, despair and parenting issues

Counselling and psychotherapy can support you when experiencing hopelessness, sadness, despair, and parenting challenges by offering a safe and non-judgmental space to explore your feelings and concerns. I can help you identify underlying causes, develop healthier ways of thinking, and build coping strategies. Counselling and psychotherapy can also support you as a parent in understanding your own emotional responses and improving your relationship with your child, leading to greater confidence and emotional well-being for both of you.
